01 The short story
I taught myself HTML, CSS and JavaScript in my spare time while working full-time in a supermarket. Eventually that turned into my first job as a web developer, building WordPress websites for an agency - and I've kept teaching myself ever since.
From there I moved to a more bespoke agency, working on everything from custom websites and online shops to full web applications. I worked on sites for local businesses and councils, trained clients on their new websites, and spent a lot of time keeping projects on track between clients, designers and developers.
These days I'm a software developer at a health-tech start-up, building medical software where getting things right really matters. Alongside that I freelance, because I enjoy being involved in the whole process - from the first chat to launch day and beyond. Helping local businesses get online properly is genuinely satisfying, and I'm proud of the work I put my name to.
02 How I work
None of this is small print. It's how every project runs, whatever the size.
You'll get one page with the scope, the price and the dates on it, worked out at £30 an hour. If the work grows, I'll quote the extra before doing it, so there are no surprise invoices.
You'll see progress every week, with a link to review and a chance to comment as we go. Nothing gets saved up for a big reveal at the end.
No page builders or bloated themes. It takes a bit longer to build, but you end up with a faster site that's easier to live with, and no mess to unpick in two years.
Code, files, fonts, domain and accounts, all in your name. Nothing's tied to me, and if you ever want to move on, I'll help you do it.
Every site gets an accessibility check before it goes live. A website should work for everyone who visits it, so it's part of the job, not an extra.
No jargon in quotes, meetings or handovers. If you can't explain what you've paid for, I haven't done my job.
03 What I build with
This is what I reach for by default. If your team already runs on something else, I'm happy to work in that instead.
I'm a family man, with a toddler and a dog keeping me busy. Most of my spare time goes on them, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm a Manchester United fan - which, in recent years, has mostly been a lesson in resilience. Otherwise you'll find me playing video games, opening trading cards or watching anything sci-fi, and I get to the gym or out for a run when I can.
A couple of lines is plenty. I reply to everything within a working day, even if the answer is “I'm not the right fit”.
