A bespoke online shop for students and teachers
An ageing website turned into an online shop for digital teaching resources, books and magazines, with separate accounts for students and teachers.
01 Why Laravel
Off-the-shelf software and plugins get you a long way. When they don't fit how your business actually works, Laravel is how I build the bit that does.
Rather than bending your process to fit a plugin, the software is built around what you actually do - your workflow, your data and your customers.
Laravel is one of the most widely used PHP frameworks, with regular releases and a big community behind it. You won't be stuck with something nobody else can work on.
Protection against common attacks like SQL injection and cross-site request forgery is built in, and I keep everything it depends on up to date.
Payment providers, CRMs, email marketing, accounting software - if it has an API, Laravel can usually talk to it.
I design and build the interface too, so the screens your team and customers use get as much care as the code behind them.
Start with what you need now and add features later, without having to start again.
02 What I can do
Booking systems, quoting tools, dashboards and internal tools, built from scratch around the problem you're trying to solve.
Logins, gated content, subscriptions and account areas. I've built members' areas for farming businesses and teaching resource sites, among others.
Connecting your site or app to the tools you already use, or building an API so other systems can connect to yours.
Stuck on an old version of Laravel or PHP? I'll upgrade it a version at a time, fix what breaks and get you back onto a supported release.
If your developer has moved on, I'll go through the code, tell you honestly what state it's in, and look after it from here.
Short on Laravel capacity? I take on white-label development work for agencies, delivered under your name.

04 Getting started
Half an hour on a call. What you're trying to solve, who'll be using it and what you can spend.
What gets built, in what order and what it costs. Bigger projects get split into stages, so you're not committing to everything at once.
You'll see features on a staging site as they're finished, rather than everything at once at the end.
It goes live, I keep a close eye on it, and I'm around for fixes, changes and whatever comes next.
05 Straight answers
Anything missing? Ask me directly and I'll give you a straight answer, not a sales one.
A PHP framework for building web applications. Rather than starting from nothing, it gives developers a solid, well-tested base for things like logins, databases and emails, so the time (and your budget) goes on the features that are specific to you.
Custom builds start from £2,400, but it depends a lot on what's involved. Smaller jobs like fixes and upgrades are charged at £30 an hour. Either way, you'll get a fixed quote before anything starts. See my pricing for more.
Yes. I'll look through the code first, check which versions it's running and how it's been put together, then tell you honestly what it needs - even if the answer is a rebuild.
Yes. Front end is as much my thing as the back end. I usually use Vue or React with Inertia, or plain Blade templates where that suits the project better, styled with Tailwind.
You do. The code lives in a Git repository you own, so you're never locked in to working with me.
Laravel needs proper server hosting rather than a basic website plan. I'll set it up on a server that suits the project, or on hosting you already have, and can look after it as part of a care plan.
A couple of lines is plenty. I reply to everything within a working day, even if the answer is “I'm not the right fit”.
